Merlot is one of the VDL Stud’s dressage talents; this 3-year-old stallion caught the eye at the KWPN Stallion Show and was honored as one of the KWPN premium stallions. With only foundation stallions in a row in his pedigree and bred out of the famous Landsvrouw damline, Merlot is also genetically a highly interesting stallion for dressage breeding.
Merlot's sire Bordeaux is one of the up-and-coming top sires; the stallion performed at Grand Prix level with both Isabel Freese and Akane Kuroki and combines the genes of Krack C-son United with the top sires Gribaldi, Donnerhall and Rousseau. Merlot's grandsire Florencio I is also considered one of the best sires of his generation with at least 35 offspring performing at Grand Prix level. Great-grandsire Vivaldi can be seen among the most influential dressage stallions of the past decades, with offspring such as Dream Boy, Desperado N.O.P., Cennin, Expression and many others.
The damline of premium stallion Merlot also produced many successful dressage horses. Dam Hyacinth-Vrouwe is a provisionally awarded ‘Keur’ mare out of the ‘Preferent’ mare Dolce Vita Vrouwe – the dam of the KWPN approved stallion Incognito. Great-great-granddam Mimosavrouwe is the dam of the world famous Glock's Undercover N.O.P .; Edward Gal's top dressage horse, winning team bronze at the London Olympics in 2012 and team gold at the European Championships in Aachen in 2015 as well as team silver at the European Championships in Herning in 2013.
From the beginning, Merlot stood out at the KWPN Stallion Show with his charming appearance, great balance and active way of moving. Merlot also impressed in the lunging section and emphasized his qualities. Merlot was chosen by the stallion selection committee as one of the KWPN premium stallions and has received a KWPN breeding license from the 2020 breeding season on.
From the beginning, Merlot stood out and confirmed this in the performance test where he was crowned Champion with a high score of 85.5 points. In the stallion competition, Merlot shows his qualities under the saddle of Bart Veeze, he moves with a lot of suppleness, a good front and hindleg, has a good rideability and a fantastic attitude. According to rider and trainer, he has all the possibilities for the highest work.
